The Shak
So there I am, standing in line at Safeway with some boneless/skinless chicken breast, a 6-pack of beer, some chips, and licorice – yea, I was going to have a sinful dinner – when the gentleman standing behind me says, “Is that your dinner? Why don’t you come over to my restaurant and I will fix you some chicken with real flavor… on the house“. I do not need to be asked twice with that kind of invitation.
It turns out that Christopher owns The Shak in Whitefish Montana, only a block up the street. I still bought my food (for a later date) but ended up at The Shak an hour later where Christopher greeted me with a cheer, “Hey! You made it!” By no means was I special as he greeted everyone that walked in the door with the same cheer and enthusiasm.
As I have learned in my travels; I left the choice of meats and sides in his hands. Deep fried chicken, brisket with spicy BBQ sauce, BBQ baked beans, and to round it all out with some veggies… potato salad. Not appealing to the vegetarians in the house, but to us carnivores it was bliss.
Of course, I couldn’t finish it all so Christopher sent me home with a paper bag stuffed with my leftovers. He refused payment no matter how much I pleaded. Little does he know his tip-jar got a little extra when he wasn’t looking. The hospitality of Montana folk is top-notch.
