The Lazy Lizard has sucked me in
My time here was up at the end of this past weekend, but when it came down to it, I just couldn’t think of another place to go that beat out the Lazy Lizard. It doesn’t help that I am waiting for Conor to arrive next week and I do not want to do things before his arrival… it would just feel fake to redo everything with him. Here I have a hot shower each day, not-so-reliable but free Wifi, and a place to sit and plug in the laptop so my van’s batteries can recharge while I work. And, as you may have been reading, I am having some great food-adventures lately and I’ve been meeting some cool people.
Harry the one-eye’d chef is the person that comes to mind first. Imagine a 60 year old Popeye look-a-like who knows his way around in the kitchen. Harry has been residing here, in a tent, for an undisclosed time of no less than 4 months.
Another character I met recently… it turns out I do not know his name yet… suffers from narcolepsy (honest!). Combine that fact with his appearance and voice from the guy in Silence of the Lambs and you got a helluva funny topic; “It puts the lotion on the…. ZZZzzzzz” LOL
There are dozens of other ‘seedy’ types. Most have long beards, exposed scabs, and come from all corners of the world. Each has their own story of why they are here and for how long. Take David for example. David is writing a book about a guy that went on a 90-day crime spree before being caught and sentenced to 40 years. It is a true story, and the main character is his very own brother. David has been camping out in a tent for the past few months as well. I offered for him to come stay in the Trailer parked beside me. He is good conversation at the minimum. Another guy, Tim, lives in his Subaru Outback. I’m really not sure how he can sleep in that little thing (I’m spoiled huh?) but he does. What makes Tim unique is that he more resembles a middle aged guy that works on Main Street. He is clearly well educated, well groomed, and even well dressed but I am not too sure his story yet. And you can’t miss Jacob; a 20-something well off kid from Oregon that came down here on his own, without a car, for his two-week vacation. He reminds me of the person I wish I was when I was his age… too busy hiking every trail he can while the sun is up, you only see Jacob at Dinner.
I have come to realize that I am literally the most ‘well-off’ person at the Lizard. My van and trailer have become quite the conversation starter. Through out the week a slow parade of hairy, scabby guys have come up to talk to me about the van and trailer. Most of these guys live in tents or compact cars, so my van is a mansion in comparison. Add to it that I tow around a second bedroom, my setup caught the eyes of a lot of these nomads on day-1.
Since I have been having a good time here I went ahead and paid up for another week. I figure I will likely have more of an adventure here then If I got back on the road for the week. I may as well rest up before Conor comes to town too… the amount of activities we will knock out in the week he is here may just kill me anyway.
