Snow-birding it… in the snow
My second snow of the year, and it happens in the middle of the desert. I joked yesterday that it may get down to the high 30’s due to this storm, and last night it dropped down to a chilly 49 in the van, but today the weather lived up to the hype; snow in Tucson.
I drove into Tucson by 10am, specifically to visit the gym for a workout and my once-every-5-day shower. I went in the gym with the rain just starting, but by the time I came back out the snow had just started to fall. My the time I pulled up to Jimmy John’s across the street (a treat I have been wanting for a few months now) it was coming down Colorado-style.
You would think I wouldn’t mind a few flakes of snow, but even I stayed indoors and started my 3rd book in 5 the past days. If there is one thing that van-living has done is made me read a lot more. Just a few years ago it was unheard of for me to “waste me time reading a book”. Now, I am always reading one and always have a few in backup just in case. On Saturday I started one book and finished it on Sunday. Monday I started another which I finished before going to bed (it was my day off), and last night I began another before bed.
I must admit, I should have listened to my Mother and teachers more (I say that a lot now). Reading is much more entertaining than a movie and much more gratifying too. I’m down to me last book, so I will stretch this one out until I can hit up an RV park and swap out the ones I have read since my last swap.
PS – The fridge is still powered on and going strong. The past two mornings I have woken to batteries down to 75-80% full and I’ve yet to go to bed with the batteries at 100%. I hadn’t thought of it, but the cooler overnight temps means the fridge does not need to turn on as often, consuming less power at night then during the day. Today I have gotten no sun, so I’ve only had engine-recharging of the batteries this morning in my 40 miles of driving. It is dinner time now and I am already down to about 80-85% power. By morning I should be down closer to 50% power left. Luckily, tomorrow looks to be a nice sunny day to do a full recharge. It sure has been nice to have cold foods without the hassle of melting ice.
You need a kindle and to move to a warmer climate! We reached 100% on our batteries twice this week. We never did when we were in Arizona (though we’re going back this weekend – Havasu City).
