Revisiting Redwoods National Park

Redwoods National Park, I’ve been here before, a few times in fact. The problem is that in previous years coming through this area I have been unable to stop and do anything of significance within the park. My work at the time, and the lack of cell signal anywhere nearby, always prevented me from going on a hike.

This time around we had the entire weekend to explore, and we *thought* we would use the whole weekend to do just that. The snag in our plan is that it is now summer, and all the campgrounds nearby are full… for months. So, we opted to take a short drive up what we thought was a random dirt road – turns out to lead to a trailhead, but a beautiful drive it was – and a then short hike along Prairie Creek. I just wanted to experience some of the park for a change.

I must say I am surprised at just how small the National Park is. Not a whole lot in the “national” parts of the park. The Redwoods State Park seems to cover more area and more of the recreational activities, like last weekend’s trip into Fern Canyon. Still, I’m pleased to have got to hang out with the Redwoods for a bit, and daydreamed of a backpacking trip through this are one day. It would be such an amazing place to spend a few nights in.
