Oct 17 – Bryce Canyon, Walter the German hitch-hiker
I did try to get in a proper hike today, but I was just dragging after the past two days of hiking. I barely made 3 miles in Bryce Canyon and knew for certain that I would not be hiking in Capital Reef Ntnl Park when I passed through in the afternoon. The hike in Bryce was enjoyable enough. I have always enjoyed rock and sandstone formations like the hoodoo’s and it was nice to get in there amongst them after seeing them from the viewpoints last year. I shared my mid-hike lunch with a bird… he reminded me of Gema; always hungry and never sits still
As I was heading closer to I-70 at Green River I picked up Walter, a hitch hiker from Germany who has been on the road for 4 months, with another 4 months to go as he end’s his trip across the America’s in South America. We had a BBQ dinner complete with American hamburgers and beer. He camped alongside the van overnight after out feast and a movie. I will be giving him a ride into Moab in the morning where we will part ways.
Mileage totals: 9 days | 1205 miles driven | 23.5 miles hiked
