Goodbye Arizona
From New Year’s eve in the desert near Havasuu City to the greater Phoenix area, national forests and parks, state parks, and truck stops… I’ve seen a lot of what Arizona has to offer during my month of January in Arizona. I have even followed along much of old Route 66 through Arizona, although not driving directly on it too many miles (too rough).
I have not been feeling any rush to leave Arizona, but the road kept sliding under the van until I reached New Mexico on Jan 24th. My final night in Arizona was parked just of I-40 on a secluded off-ramp, but Arizona gave me a pretty sunset and moon to remember it by.
My 3-year long love/hate relationship with New Mexico started with a dirt road outside Las Cruces that caused my first mechanical failure in all my miles of road-tripping. The next year, just outside Roswell New Mexico, my second ever mechanical failure. And in both cases Las Cruces has been my savior… just limping into town to find a parts store to make on the fly repairs.
I learned last year that, while I have always felt New Mexico was one f-ugly woman… a few beers down the chute and she transforms into a wonderful, welcoming, and not-so-bad-to-look at state. In fact, there is a lot of beauty here, you just have to look past the trash along the Interstate.
