Glacier Ntnl Park – Going to the Sun Road

Going to the Sun RdGoing-to-the-Sun Road is the only road that crosses Glacier National Park going over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. It was completed in 1932. The road, both a National Historic Landmark and a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, spans 53 miles (85 km) across the width of the park. The road is named for Going-to-the-Sun Mountain, which dominates the eastbound view beyond Logan Pass. One mythological story tells of the deity Sour Spirit, who returned to the sun after teaching the Blackfeet to hunt, leaving his image on the mountain.

I finally got to complete the 53 mile drive, something I have been looking forward to completing for 3 years now. Luckily, the weather was not an ideal sunny day; it started raining and as I climbed up the mountains. I then drove among the clouds before the sun came out as I crested the continental divide. Then, when I thought it was all over, a black-bear ran straight out in front of me… with just enough notice to get my camera up to snap a photo. It was perfect!
