Fossil Butte Ntnl Monument

After an entire day of driving through two National Parks and hundreds of miles of lonely (but scenic) country roads, we ended up a few miles outside of Fossil Butte Ntnl Monument at the South-Western corner of Wyoming. This got us out of the foul weather, but no where near our original path. After completing my work for the night, we moved the van into the park boundaries and parked under a train over-pass for the night. It was not hard to fall asleep, even if trains were passing overhead, as the long drive tired us all.

In the morning we headed up into the park to explore and we were surprised at what we found; Surely, there are many many ancient fossils in this area. Most are still buried while some reside in the visitors center making them easy to spot without the need to hike at all. However, we took the advice of the ranger and did do a 1.5 mile hike at the top of the Butte which had tons of trees and even a few streams, making for some very nice views as well as spectacular foliage.

After taking an hour to complete the hike we heading back within cellular range to take care of my afternoon workload and continued south to I80 where we would decide which way to go from there.
