Dressage at the Pima County Fairgrounds

Yesterday we got new neighbors; Heather and Will backed into the space beside us with horse in tow. As we spoke last night, I found out Heather would be competing in the Dressage competition on Saturday. Since I was planning to take some pictures of the competition anyway, she (and her horse) became my target.

Heather and Will were gracious enough to let me know what to expect and give me some history of Dressage which is not much different than what I know about the finer arts of car-control when at the brink of adhesion on a race track. For the majority of her run Heather’s eyes were closed… not of fear, but of concentration in the controls of her horse. Not only are the reins used, but subtle hip, leg, and foot movements are used to control the horse into numerous formations and movements. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

I was lucky to have gotten the photos that I did. Not only did my camera let me down on the majority of the 177 images, I only just made it in time for Heather’s run in the competition and had to settle for a not-so-great position to setup.
