Crater Lake Ntnl Park
Oregon’s only National Park, Crater Lake is the caldera of a destroyed volcano, Mount Mazama. The lake is more than 1,940 feet deep making it the deepest lake in the United States, the second deepest in North America and the ninth deepest in the world.
At the Western side of Crater lake is Wizard Island, a cinder cone that peaks roughly 700 feet above the water level which has a distinct dark blue tint to it, making it spectacular and a bit creepy at the same time.
For those of you that I have talked with in the recent week, you know just how close I came to passing by this park. I was still in the process of passing it by when a quick calculation ended in the cost of $25 in gasoline to take on the added mileage… and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to save a measly $25.
Sadly, the lake was just too big for the camera to take it all in a single photo from the rim road. The reflection of the opposite side of the lake (miles away) in the dark water was impressive. If it were not for the fact that the sky way a lighter blue than the water, it would be easy to mistake which was the real rim.
