Buckeye Hills Regional Park, AZ

Before pulling out of the Phoenix area I glanced at a map and saw Buckeye Hills Regional Park just south-west of the greater Phoenix area. The park, “slated for future development”, has only a few pit toilets, picnic tables and well graded gravel roads that will take you one to two miles off the highway. Buckeye’s 4,474 acres of natural desert is wide open and beautiful and at this time of the year, completely empty.

When I arrived, I passed only one other RV’er parked in the first half-mile of road. I drove another 1 full mile out before choosing my boondocking location near the furthers pit toilet. Quite literally, the two of us had the entire 4,474 acres to ourselves and we were separated by one full mile of dirt road. An hour after I arrived I was visited by the camp hosts, who welcomed me and invited me to “stay as long as you want”… Thank you very much, I think I will.

Being only 8 miles south of I-10 and the greater Phoenix area, I was able to get clear cell service and my Verizon MiFi worked great too. I really couldnt ask for more from a boondocking site. I spent 4 days and 3 nights out there with no other people to talk too. I took a few short hikes, took a lot of photos and did some much needed work on the van. Buckeye Hills was exactly what I needed; a few days to myself to get things in line.
