Bandera Ice Cave

IMG_4297The temperature in this cave never gets above 31 degrees. As rain and snow-melt seep into the cave the ice floor thickens… more and more each year. They estimate it to be over 20 feet thick, with the deepest ice being more than 3400 years old. The green tint is from an arctic algae.

Alright, I admit I was expecting more, but this ice cave is still pretty cool (pun intended). While I thought it would be a huge cave deep underground, I was not disappointed once I got to spend a few minutes looking around and taking pictures.
