Adding appliances

microwaveIt’s not like I have an abundance of space in the van for luxuries, but with the giving away of my $5 microwave in December and my new found fondness of slow-cooking, I had to spend a few dollars to catch back up with my appliances.

It was easy to replace the microwave thanks to Craig’s List. Only a few minutes of searching and a quick 2 mile drive netted me another microwave. This time it is a $10 microwave. 900 watts of cooking power, for those times I am plugged in. Otherwise it is a great place to store my bread, tortillas, and chips.

IMG_0503My other addition is a 2-quart cheapo slow cooker which I also planned to only use when I am plugged in while camping, but as luck would have it the slow cooker only uses 90 watts of power. This means I could use my incoming solar power to cook some chilli or stew with this little guy.

Since I will be heading South, I figured I would try another method of slow-cooking; the solar oven. I’ve been researching simple, compact, and portable solar ovens and have a few to try when I am further south.
